Energy Star Energy Efficiency Energy Star

Which level is right for you in the U.S.?

ENERGY STAR® is the trusted, government-backed label (run by the U.S. EPA and Department of Energy) that tells you a product is truly energy efficient. Every ENERGY STAR window is independently tested for:

  • Insulation (U-Factor): keeps heat in during winter and out during summer
  • Sun control (SHGC): manages how much of the sun's heat comes through the glass
  • Airtightness: stops drafts and leaks

The result: lower energy bills, year-round comfort, and a smaller environmental footprint, all while adding value to your home.

Your climate sets the target

In the U.S., ENERGY STAR doesn't use one national number. It sets different targets for four climate zones, because the right window for Minnesota isn't the right window for Florida.

Two ratings, printed on the NFRC label that ships with every Iris window, show how a window measures up:

  • U-Factor: how well the window insulates. Lower is better.
  • SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient): how much of the sun's heat passes through. Cold climates want some of it (free winter warmth). Hot climates want less.

The four zones (ENERGY STAR Version 7.0)

Northern: Upper Midwest, Northeast, Mountain states, Pacific Northwest, Alaska
U-Factor 0.22 or lower • SHGC 0.17 or higher
Insulation comes first, and a minimum SHGC lets free winter sun in. Windows can also qualify with a U-Factor up to 0.26 if the SHGC is 0.40 or higher.

North-Central: Lower Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, parts of the interior West
U-Factor 0.25 or lower • SHGC 0.40 or lower
Real heating and cooling seasons, so it balances both.

South-Central: Southwest, southern Plains, much of the Southeast
U-Factor 0.28 or lower • SHGC 0.23 or lower
Cooling dominates, so sun control gets much stricter.

Southern: Florida, Gulf Coast, southern Texas, Hawaii
U-Factor 0.32 or lower • SHGC 0.23 or lower
Blocking the sun is the priority.

Zones follow county lines, so some states include more than one.

ENERGY STAR Certified

Our ENERGY STAR certified windows meet the Version 7.0 targets for their climate zone.

What this means for you:

  • Verified energy efficiency at an excellent value
  • Noticeable savings on heating and cooling bills
  • Fewer drafts and more consistent indoor temperatures
  • A smart choice for most American homes

ENERGY STAR Most Efficient

The top tier. Most Efficient windows go a step further on insulation, typically reaching a U-Factor of 0.20 or lower (usually with triple-pane glass).

What this means for you:

  • Elite performance, among the best-performing windows sold in the U.S.
  • Superior insulation and tighter sealing for maximum comfort, even in extreme climates
  • The best long-term energy savings

So, which is right for you?
  • Choose ENERGY STAR Certified if you want proven efficiency at the best value. It's the right choice for most homes.
  • Choose ENERGY STAR Most Efficient if you live in a cold climate, want the most comfortable home possible, or plan to stay for the long haul. It's the best performance available, and the difference shows most in colder climates, where insulation matters most.

Either way, choosing any ENERGY STAR product is what matters most. It makes your home more comfortable, cheaper to run, and better for the environment, without compromising quality or performance.

The zone numbers above apply to windows. Doors are rated on a separate scale based on how much glass they have, and Most Efficient recognition covers windows and sliding glass doors only.
